Suspects linked to weekend robberies arrested after shootout with police

Two suspects were arrested, and one fatally shot, when Middelburg detectives followed up on a lead pertaining to the armed robberies that took place at Choppies and the Big 5 Liqour Store.

According to a statement issued by the Middelburg SAPS, the detectives approached a residence in Mhluzi after receiving information about the robberies.

Upon their arrival, the suspects opened fire on them, injuring one of the detectives.

The members then shot back in defence, killing one suspect before arrresting the other two. A black Audi A4 and gold Audi A4 where also confiscated for purposes of investigation.

The two arrested suspects, Sipho David Sigudu(35) and Flavio Gulley(38), appeared before the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection to the two armed robberies, where bail was denied.

The injured detective was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries and a case of attempted murder was opened accordingly.

• The Middelburg SAPS Station Commander wished to commend W/O Senyatsi, Sgt George Nkoana, Sgt Banze, Cst Mdebele, Cst Mahlare and head detective, Colonel Seimela for the work done in apprehending the suspects.
