Local businesses step up to the plate to help clean Middelburg

Local companies have taken hands to help clean up Middelburg. “We are joining hands by getting our hands dirty,” the companies announced.

The town’s waste removal services have been crippled by an ongoing strike, with workers opposing the planned outsourcing of services and demanding the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality be moved from a Level 4 municipality to a Level 6 municipality. This will mean higher salaries for municipal workers but would also mean higher rates and taxes for residents.

Negotiations between the two parties have seemingly reached a deadlock with the strike dragging on for several weeks. Rubbish have been piling up in the streets of Middelburg.

The DA recently started cleaning up parts of the Central Business District with others political parties following suit.
Local businesses have now stepped up to the plate, offering free waste removal services by using company vehicles and volunteers to collect rubbish in residential areas.

Blue Ribbon, Isuzu Middelburg and Qembu Motors have all made workers and vehicles available to help clear away the rubbish. They have vehicles operating in Kanonkop and Dennesig, Eastedene, Extension 18, Aerorand and Gholfsig.
