Three arrested in connection with Belfast gang violence
Three suspects were arrested after a surge of gang related violence in Belfast.
Clashing gangs in Siyathuthuka saw a bloodbath with four people killed over two weeks in October. All the deceased were stabbed or hacked to death with a sharp object.
The murders sparked a special operation by police in order to track down those behind the violence. Information was received that several role players got wind of the operation and managed to flee to neighbouring towns and provinces.
Col. Donald Mdluli, of the Provincial Communication Office, said that three men were arrested during the operation.
Angel Chunza (28) and Thulani Ngwenya (27) were charged with murder as well as malicious damage to property. A third suspect, Bongani Jelle (36), was charged with malicious damage to property.
The men appeared in court this week for their formal bail application. The outcome thereof could not be established.
• The gang violence in Belfast is said to be related to stock theft and illegal firearms. One source said that the Tractor Gang and Maboyeni Boys, who has since split in two, are behind the bloodshed.
• Incidents of gang related violence is increasing not only locally. Clashes between Boko Haram and a breakaway group Bafarasai has seen eight people murdered in Mamelodi since August.
A national media outlet reported that Phillip Given Mnguni, believed to be the leader of Boko Haram, was killed when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle on the N4.
