Meeting called to discuss striking workers’ fate

After seven weeks of ongoing strikes and municipal infrastructure sabotage, Municipal Manager, Advocate Bheki Khenisa, and Mayor Diphala Motsepe are expected to meet this afternoon to discuss the future of striking workers.

Kgosi Makwati, who is representing the workers, said the striking municipal employees are waiting for the next council sitting so the case can be reviewed again.

Workers are demanding a pay hike, with 36-months back pay, and also want to be upgraded from Level 4 to Level 5.

The municipality has been dragging its feet regarding the fate of the workers, and participating in strike action generally constitutes a dismissal.

The municipality obtained a court order against the workers who downed tools almost two months ago, leaving uncollected rubbish all over town. Potholes are now also starting to rear their ugly heads all over the municipality.
