Community saves life of man threatening to jump from roof in CBD

The community saved the life of a belligerent man on Saturday night, after he threatened to jump from the Engen garage's roof on the corner of Walter Sisulu- and Cowen Ntuli Streets around 20:00.

Two members of the public prevented the man from scaling the edge of the roof until police members made their way up to the roof on a ladder, to assist with the wild struggle.

The man eventually fell from the roof onto a tarpaulin held by members of the community who swiftly assisted police with arresting the man, and carrying him to the awaiting police van.

Police struggled for some time to get the man into the back of the van.

Once inside, the man wailed loudly while a large crowd of community members gathered around the van to record video footage of the dramatic event.

Its unclear how the man got onto the roof.

Many of the people who gathered on the scene were dressed in pajamas, while a number of men carrying sjamboks and knobkieries were also on the scene.

The man was not injured during the fall.
