Inaugural sitting: ANC claims seat for Chief Whip

The ANC has secured their position in council after winning the elections for Executive Mayor, Council Speaker and Chief Whip during the inaugural sitting.

The abstinence to vote from the DA and FF+ further secured the ANC’s stronghold on council with the EFF and MHRF’s combined vote of 16 seats losing to the ANC’s 22 votes.

The new Chief Whip was last to be elected during the sitting, which saw the ANC’s Casious Mashiloane coming out victorious with 23 votes against fellow nominee, Cindy Mshabela from the MHRF, with 15.

The ANC now holds the following positions in the new council for 2022: Petros Masilela as Executive Mayor for STLM, Independent Candidate, Thomas Mpye as speaker, and Casious Mashiloane as Chief Whip.
