Members of Middelburg Flying Squad shot in CIT heist

The Witbank SAPS have launched a manhunt for suspects involved in a cash-in-transit heist that took place on Saturday on the N4.

The heist took place on the N4 and N12 split where two security guards were also shot and injured in the process.

According to a police report, a Fidelity cash van, escorted by two bakkies, were traveling from Hendrina on the N4 when two Mercedes Benz C-Class vehicles sped after the entourage and collided with the cash van, causing it to overturn. The other vehicle tried to bump one of the bakkies, which swerved off the road.

A shootout ensued while the robbers proceeded to bomb the cash van, injuring two of the guards.

Members of the Middelburg Flying Squad rushed to the scene, where upon their arrival they were ambushed by another group of suspects driving in a Mazda ix35.

Two of the members were shot and injured in the shootout while the third member managed to escape injury. The suspects then fled in a grey Audi and the Mazda.

Police managed to arrest a 44 year-old suspect who was in possession of a large sum of money believed to have been stolen at the scene. The suspect appeared in the eMalahleni Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of theft.

The SAPS asks that anyone with information that could assist in the investigation should call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or send information via MYSAPSAPP.
