South African Civil Aviation Authority to investigate aircraft crash

The South African Civil Aviation Authority said it is investigating the accident involving a light aircraft that crashed near the Middelburg Airfield last Friday.

The aircraft was reportedly flown by a British pilot and the two passengers inside were also British.

The Cessna 421B Golden Eagle departed from Eastgate Aerodrome in Hoedspruit before crashing 1.5km east of Middelburg Airfield.

It is alleged that the aircraft ran out of fuel before crashing, other reports claim that the pilot mistook the gravel road for the runway.

Maria Bay of the South African Civil Aviation Authority said the Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) has dispatched investigators to determine the cause of the accident.

No serious injuries were sustained during the accident, two of the passengers were treated on the scene.

One of the passengers was transported to the Life Midmed Hospital, however, he was not admitted and a case was not opened with the Middelburg Police.
