Solid waste strike averted, garbage removal continues

The municipal solid waste department protested at the municipality earlier over employment issues, though the dispute has since been resolved.

Workers arrived with dump trucks and blockaded the civic centre parking area this morning.

According to municipal spokesperson Ms Prudence Magutle, workers discussed their grievances with management and all issues were resolved. She declined to give information on what the problem was.

Ms Magutle says garbage removal services will continue as normal.

Meanwhile, the municipality will engage with the community in regards to the memorandum handed to the municipality during Friday’s protests.

The protestors, calling themselves Concerned Residents and Businesses are demanding the immediate suspension of Municipal Manager Advocate Bheki Khenisa.

Advocate Khenisa is currently on annual leave and will only return to office next year. An acting Municipal Manager has been appointed in his absence.

According to Concerned Residents and Businesses a total municipal shutdown is still being planned if the municipality does not respond favorably to their demands.

Other demands include lifestyle audits for top municipal management, forensic investigations into tender issues under Advocate Khenisa, and the cancellation of all contracts with private service providers.

Ms Magutle says protestors agreed to the Wednesday deadline for answers to their demands.
