Municipality in a pickle as rains hamper services suspended during holidays
The municipality was closed between Christmas and New Year, with only stand-by teams on hand to tend to electricity outages and water pipe bursts, alongside law enforcement and emergency services.
Services like grass cutting and pothole repairs, which has been mainly suspended during the municipal closure during the Christmas and New Year period, will receive attention once weather conditions improve, the municipality says.
Residents, one having counted more than 36 potholes on one drive, have been complaining about the delay in services like grass cutting and road maintenance.
The municipality was closed between Christmas and New Year, with only stand-by teams on hand to tend to electricity outages and water pipe bursts, alongside law enforcement and emergency services.
The municipality issued a statement in response to growing criticism yesterday, saying it was working hard to address backlogs in the maintenance of parks, walkways, roads and storm water drainage.
“The municipality will find the resources to take up the work on a priority basis,” Acting Municipal Manager David Mogofe said, adding “we are also aware of the urgent need to ramp up road repairs and storm water problems”.
He however stressed that there was “no point in repairing these problems now, just to be damaged again,” blaming continuing rainfall for pothole repair delays.
Teams were, however, out and about yesterday tending to the most dangerous potholes.
Mr Mogofe said teams will continue to fix the most perilous potholes, and urged motorists to drive cautiously, “the entire municipal area will eventually be serviced,” he guaranteed.
