Middelburg Central the ‘unfavoured child’

Residents and Ward Councillors alike are scrambling to grab the attention of the municipality and contractors and while a power outage grips most parts of Middelburg, some wards feel abandoned after being left without electricity for six days.

DA Ward Councillor, San-Mari Wait, contacted www.mobserver.co.za where she openly admitted to sharing the frustrations felt by residents of Bhimy Demane Street as well as OR Tambo Street who have been without electricity for four and six days respectively, despite numerous reports to the Municipal Manager and directors.

“I have not only reported power outages in these areas but implored with them to give these faults immediate attention and yet we are kept in the dark with no feedback. These residents are throwing away thousands of rand in food that is going off, they can’t activate their alarms to safeguard their houses in an already crime-ridden area and some residents have spent over a R1000 on fuel for generators knowing full well that they can expect the same bill at the end of the month. I fail to understand why wards like Dennesig and Kanonkop are being tended to first when other areas have been without electricity for longer,” Cllr. Wait said.

•A live electrical cable is also hanging haphazardly outside the premises of Klim en Klouter Kleuterskool in Bhimy Demane Street and despite numerous reports, it has not yet been attended to despite posing a serious threat to children and pedestrians.
