The disruption of services by municipal employees has become a weekly occurrence now.

According to employees who’ve spoken to www.mobserver.co.za, municipal employees are raging against the new security contractor they allege intimidates them.

They also claim that the free movement of employees at the municipality is being restricted and monitored by the new security contractor.

According to employees, unhappy workers are barring their colleagues from entering the workplace, instigators also demand the withdrawal of disciplinary charges against 12 colleagues facing charges of insubordination and instigation.

The council heard during last week’s sitting that the municipality is definitely forging ahead with disciplinary procedures.
All employees facing charges have been suspended pending the outcome of their individual disciplinary tribunals.

The public is also being denied entry to the municipality.

The unrest follows last week’s disruptions at the municipality, caused by flooding. Mayor Mhlonishwa Masilela, Speaker Thomas Mpye and MPAC Chairman Mr Hennie Niemann’s offices were all flooded overnight last Thursday after a municipal employee left a faucet open in one of the bathrooms.

The municipality experienced water interruptions before the flooding.

Meanwhile, threats by municipal employees to disrupt Mayor Masilela’s inauguration on Friday came to nothing, and the events, including a Friday morning breakfast and the inauguration at Mhluzi stadium, went ahead as planned.

A strike has not been called.
