Those who did show up for work were barred entry to the municipality by aggressive colleagues demanding Level 5 salaries.

The issue came up during last week’s council sitting, where the council resolved to remain steadfast on SALGA’s instructions not to entertain employees’ demands.

Only the central bargaining council can implement a Level 5 salary upgrade in consultation with unions.
SALGA warned the administration, and the council, not to give in to employees’ demands.

Employees are also demanding the withdrawal of additional, armed security contractors, which they say “make them feel unsafe and intimidated”.

No one was allowed inside the municipality today, and it’s unclear whether services will resume tomorrow.

Employees further demand the full reinstatement of more than 10 employees suspended for allegedly orchestrating ongoing labour disputes within the municipality.

Acting Municipal Manager Ms Thokozile Zulu was not available today to meet with employees.
A meeting is set to take place once she becomes available.

Meanwhile, the provincial department of cooperative governance has launched several investigations into the ongoing labour disputes, including tender reviews.

The department has not ruled out placing the municipality under administration, as called for by local attorney Andre Brandmuller.

Meanwhile, no services are being rendered.
