Residents can expect no municipal services to be delivered today as municipal employees brace for a meeting with Acting Municipal Manager Ms Thokozile Zulu, to address their demands that disciplinary charges and suspensions be withdrawn against more than 10 alleged strike instigators, including firebrand Kgosi Makwati.

Municipal workers downed tools yet again yesterday in solidarity with their suspended colleagues.

They demand the immediate withdrawal of charges against the implicated officials.

Ms Zulu was not available yesterday to address the workers’ demands, leading to a shutdown of the civic centre.

The building is also experiencing electrical problems after political offices were flooded last week after someone left a bathroom tap open.

IMATU and SAMWU shop stewards issued Ms Zulu with a final demand late yesterday.

According to the letter, employees mandated union stewards to pressure municipal management to withdraw all charges against suspended municipal employees by August 1.

They demand the charges be withdrawn “unconditionally and immediately”.

On July 29, employee representatives met with corporate services to outline the demands.

Feedback was expected yesterday, but workers received none with Ms Zulu being absent from her office.

Ms Zulu requested a meeting with shop stewards telephonically, with workers agreeing to meet Ms Zulu today, with the precondition that charges and disciplinary action against implicated employees are withdrawn.

Union reps are expected to meet with management at 12:00 today.

Meanwhile, residents can expect another day of no services.
