Three days and counting – Municipality still closed, no services rendered
The municipality is still closed, after employees embarked on another strike on Monday.
A meeting is scheduled to take place at 11:00 between Acting Municipal Manager, Ms Thokozile Zulu, and union shop stewards from Samwu and Imatu.
Workers are demanding three things, namely, a salary upgrade from level 4 to level 5, and both the immediate withdrawal of disciplinary charges against 12 suspended employees and removal of additionally contracted armed security.
Employees have meanwhile been ordered back to work by Ms Zulu.
The no-work-no-pay policy has been implemented and managers have been ordered to hold a roll call of employees every three hours.
The only problem is, managers are also sitting at home, being barred entry to the municipality by employees.
Its clear that neither the administration nor council has any sway over employees.
Workers say their demands are non-negotiable.
