DA intervention provides access to clean water in Doornkop
The DA in Middelburg is happy to learn that a portion of the Doornkop community (phase one) can finally access clean water.
This comes after Steve Tshwete Local Municipality councillor, Anphia Grobler, managed to secure sponsors to sink two boreholes for the community of Ward 29 in Doornkop.
“It is unacceptable that the community of phase one in Doornkop was made to buy water, a basic service delivery that the municipality failed to supply.”
The community was not provided with a valid explanation as to why the municipality could not provide them with water, instead they were forced to travel for 1.5km to purchase water in a different section. On certain occasions, this water ran out before it could accommodate everyone.
The dire situation prompted the community to come together and make financial contributions towards sinking boreholes and solar-powered pumps. However, out of over 5 000 households, only 13 households were able to make a financial contribution.
Cllr. Grobler, therefore, stepped in and assisted the community in acquiring three sponsors. As a result, over 5 000 households in the community now have access to clean water at no cost.
“We will continue to advocate for the provision of adequate basic services. It is through the DA’s hard work and commitment to getting things done that phase one of Doornkop now has access to water,” said Cllr. Grobler.
