Strike update: Employees waiting on Minister, MEC for final say
A breakthrough in negotiations has not been reached yet, striking municipal employee spokesman Kgosi Makwati has confirmed.
Municipal employees are still locked in negotiations with Cooperative Governance Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, and Mpumalanga COGTA MEC Mandla Ndlovu.
According to Mr Makwati, Minister Dlamini-Zuma and MEC Ndlovu have been fully briefed on employee demands, and workers are waiting with bated breath for a favourable outcome.
He warned earlier today that without an intervention from national and provincial governments, the strike is set to continue indefinitely.
The meeting started earlier today and comes on the back of a ministerial meeting with municipal and political management on Friday.
The situation reached tipping point last Wednesday when private security contractors opened fire on municipal protestors, killing two and injuring two more.
The alleged triggerman, Nqubeko Mchunu from PPP Protection and Security, appeared in court on Friday, facing two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
