Calls for immediate rebates on refuse removal in absence of services
The Democratic Alliance says the party is not against an upgrade from level 4, to a level 5 salary increase for employees, but that the right processes should be followed.
In a freshly issued press release the DA caucus in council says “we support the upgrade to level 5 in principle as it is spelt out in terms of legislation, and we believe the process must be completed, as quickly as possible, before implementation of grade 5 according to the Bargaining Council agreement”.
The caucus, however, support the no-work-no-pay policy “as this is standard labour practice, and per council resolution”.
“Termination of employment must be strictly enforced in the event of an illegal strike, and refusal to return to work, despite ultimatums,” the caucus added.
“Management is failing the community by not acting in accordance with standard labour practices, and this is further delaying services to the community”.
The party caucus also took a swipe at Acting Municipal Manager, Ms Thokozile Zulu who the DA says, “is failing the community by not employing contractors to deliver services paid for by the community such as road maintenance, refuse removal and licencing services, to name a few”.
The party says its in the process of seeking legal opinions over the “non-enforcement of the two ultimatums issued to striking employees in accordance with the Labour Relations Act and that of essential services that may not, according to law, partake in any strike”.
The non-compliance to the council resolution will also be challenged, the caucus warns.
The party is calling for immediate rebates for the community in regards to days refuse removal did not take place, due to the strike.
“The municipality must appoint contractors to remove rubbish, especially in the CBD where it poses a major health risk”.
