An armed robber stormed Welcome Supermarket in the CBD yesterday shortly before the close of business.
The owner was lucky to escape with his life after being shot at, taking a bullet to the leg.

Shocking video footage of the brazen robbery shows a gunman entering the store before exchanging words with shopkeepers.

Video footage of the incident clearly shows the robber blasting off a shot at the compliant store owner, who retreats into a corner of the shop with another man.
The robber then exits the supermarket, only to return moments later.

The other cornered victim next to the owner, however, blocks the robber’s re-entry, by toppling stacked crates filled with cold drink bottles into the robber’s path.
Bottles shatter as several people inside the store grab the chance to gang up on the armed man, who makes a beeline for the street.

Customers can immediately be seen exiting the store to safety as the robber flees.

The owner was rushed to the hospital but later discharged to recuperate at home.

In the video, the victim looks down at his leg after taking a bullet, shaking the extremity off, as if to get rid of an irritation.

• Last night, the CPF, SAPS and Boerelegioen members held a mass patrol when they were informed of a gang of four armed robbers loitering around Van’s Bargains.

A car guard saw two of the robbers with handguns, with one of the robbers armed with a gun in each hand. The shop was, however, closed, and the robbers made off in a white Hyundai kombi. The incident happened at around 20:00.

• In July, the members of the SAPS Highway Patrol arrested an armed man during a shootout, following a high-speed chase on the N4.
The Mozambican suspect was identified as an active shooter in the incident and was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

• In July, three armed men in a white Toyota Corolla attacked a father and his two daughters on Hibiscus Street in Kanonkop. Luckily no one was injured.

• On August 1, a patron waiting in line at Toscana Takeaways in Jeppe Street was killed when one of four robbers shot him in the head execution style.

The four robbers continued robbing the store while Mr Sam Nyambo (31) lay dead on the floor. The cold-blooded murder happened in the presence of shocked customers. The getaway vehicle was later found abandoned in Nasaret.

• A hijacking victim walked himself to the hospital after being shot on August 4. The victim fled with his bakkie’s keys, resulting in the vehicle stalling in the CBD, and the hijacker fleeing on foot.

• Hendrina became a war zone on August 5 when 17 heavily armed robbers failed to execute a cash-in-transit heist. Ten of the 17 suspects were apprehended in a joint operation after a massive shootout with the police, who ambushed the robbers.

Police conducted house-to-house searches for the remaining robbers who’ve been known to be regular visitors to a local drug house.

• On August 14, a group of armed robbers, suspected to be the same gang that attacked Toscana Takeaways, arrived in a white VW Polo at Constantia Cafe in Klip Street, before robbing the store.

The area is nefarious for open prostitution, drug dealing and vagrancy.
