Waste collection to resume today

Municipal workers have resumed their duties after a month-long illegal strike.

Residents in areas that are scheduled for waste collection today (Friday) are urged to take out their waste.

Those whose waste is usually collected on Wednesdays will have their waste collected this Saturday.

Areas that are serviced on Thursdays will have their waste collected on Sunday.

The month-long strike ended on Thursday when it was agreed that municipal employees will be implemented on a grade 5 salary scale, with backpay owed from July 1 this year.

The suspension against 17 employees has also been withdrawn, while the charges against them will stand.

The ongoing strike started last September when workers demanded to be upgraded to grade 5 salary scale.
Since then workers have been going on sporadic illegal strikes.

The municipality has also lost millions due to infrastructure damage.
