Mayor forced out of office on first day back

Mayor Mhlonishwa Masilela has been frogmarched from the municipal buildings by municipal employees who refuse to work with him in the building.

Mayor Masilela was escorted from the civic centre under the protection of bodyguards while cheering employees lined the halls.
He was driven from the premises while scores of employees shouted for him not to return.

Mayor Masilela returned to the office for the first time today since the September 1 appointment of the new municipal manager, Mr Mandla Mnguni.

According to sources within the municipality, employees have not embarked on a strike.
Employees, however, refuse to work with Mayor Masilela inside the building.

Employees have demanded both the resignation of Mayor Masilela and former Acting Municipal Manager Ms Thokozile Zulu, who is still employed in an executive director’s position.

Ms Zulu has also not returned to work and is working remotely for now.

The EFF has already indicated that the party will table a motion of no confidence in Mayor Masilela at the next council sitting.

Employees say that as long as both Mayor Masilela and Ms Zulu are not in the office, work will continue as normal, pending the motion of no confidence and the possible suspension of Ms Zulu.
