Residents and scholars from Eastdene Combined School have suffered under the stench of constant sewer leaks for over four years, due to a main sewer line that runs from the industrial area being unable to transfer the high volume of effluent.

A resident told www.mobserver.co.za that the Vaalbank stream feeds directly into the Klein Olifants River, and that the constant pollution is a “major health risk”.

The main sewer line of 1.7 kilometres that runs between Zuid Street and Eastdene, has already been identified as the cause for constant sewer leaks.

DA Ward Councillor, Johann Dyason, who serves on the Portfolio Committee for Infrastructure, has previously pointed out that the dense population of wards that rely on the sewer line also results in frequent blockages.

The upgrade of the sewer line was approved by council in January 2021.

Cllr. Dyason added that the recent municipal strike has caused an enormous backlog on services, resulting in the extension of deadlines on municipal projects.

While he could not confirm the date scheduled for the upgrades to commence before time of publication, he assured that the upgrade would certainly bring relief to the constant sewer leaks.

He also assured residents that the sewer leak will be prioritized.
