R2 billion fraud sting – Former Eskom bigwig appears in court alongside wife, daughter

Former acting Eskom CEO and power utility executive, Matshela Koko, his wife Mosima and daughter Koketso Choma are appearing in the Middelburg Magistrate's Court alongside five other co-accused on charges of fraud and money laundering.

Koko has been a key player in the capturing of Eskom, the Zondo Commission found.

The charges relate to an Eskom contract awarded to Swiss-based Engineering company Asia Brown Boveri (ABB).

The Swiss contractor subcontracted Impulse International despite Ms Choma’s shareholder status.
She allegedly pocketed R30 million from the deal.

Its alleged that Koko promised ABB further contracts worth billions.

ABB also subcontracted Leago Engineering, at a cost of R96 million, before roping in Impulse International.

The suspects were arrested during an early morning blitz in Mpumalanga and Gauteng.

According to police the fraud and money laundering amounts to more than R2 billion.

The contracts were all approved during the construction of Eskom’s Kusile Power Plant.

In 2020, ABB agreed to return R1.5 billion to Eskom but has since said it would ringfence R6 billion to cover further costs as investigations into more irregularities progress.
