The municipality will be installing CCTV cameras near the gate where the municipal manager, along with her personal driver, Gugu Mtshweni were kidnapped. As well as behind the municipal building.

The district mayor addressed the media today (Friday) about Maggie Skosana’s kidnapping.
Before the media briefing started pastors from the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality gathered for a prayer session at the municipality.

Mayor Mabuza mentioned that the newly appointed municipal manager is currently not feeling well and that her family is looking into getting her psychological help. “We are thankful that in a country where woman are abducted and killed, the manager and her driver were found alive,” Mayor Mabuza said.

When asked about the R5 million ransom the mayor said the kidnappers didn’t ask the district for the money and she can’t confirm whether the money was paid or not. She added that she hasn’t had the opportunity to speak to the MM’s family about the matter.

The mayor also addressed the rumours that the kidnapping could be linked to the awarding of tenders in municipal projects. She said the municipality currently has five work packages and the three major ones have already been awarded to different companies. The remainders are smaller value tenders.
She said she doesn’t think the motive of the kidnapping was linked to tenders.

Private investigators however, said publicly that specific information about the municipality was demanded during ransom negotiations.

In the meantime, the MM is on special leave.
