Riot control guards to evict squatters

The Middelburg Police, Steve Tshwete Law Enforcers and riot control guards have gathered at the entrance of Hlalamnandi.

It is not clear what time the evictions will take place.

The officers will be making their way to the informal settlement in the area to demolish the illegal structures and evict the squatters residing there.

In 2018, the Red Ants also dealt with the removal of trespassers who set up shacks in the same area.

Riot control guards have gathered at the entrance to Hlalamnandi.

The evictions left hundreds displaced, and the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality had to supply tents and temporary accommodation.
A nine-month-old baby, Girly Mbuyane, died from exposure due to the cold weather in the tents.

The squatters lived in the tents for months, before returning to the same area they were removed from.

Law enforcers will be accompanying the riot control guards.
