Visit to Peru cancelled by delayed flight
Local celebrity and public persona, Christo de Ridder’s opportunity to represent South Africa on the global stage of Mr Planet Universe has been put on hold after a delayed flight hampered his visit to the colourful shores of Peru.
The former Mr South Africa finalist was bound for the Port of Ilo this week after months of preparation and all expenses were paid.
Christo was invited to compete in the Mr Planet Universe competition in 2019 before the pandemic indefinitely postponed the event, which was finally rescheduled for this December.
The main objective of the competition is to fortify brotherhood between different countries, especially within the tourism sector.
His plans were stalled after a flight to Amsterdam was delayed, which in turn affected all other connecting flights.
“I would have flown from Johannesburg to Amsterdam with a connecting flight to Lima, Peru, as well as catch another flight from Lima to Port of Ilo. After the flight was delayed, the airline could only arrange another flight from Amsterdam to Paris, but not only would I have missed my flight to Port of Ilo, which only flies twice a week, I also needed a Schengen visa for the 12-hour layover at the airport in Paris.”
While the cancellation of his visit to Peru is disappointing, he was surprised by the airline and the organisers’ efforts to assist him.
“After finding out about my setbacks, the organisers are currently in the process of seeing whether I could participate virtually, or attend next year’s competition. The airline has also offered to cover the expenses of next year’s flights or refund me as far as possible.”
Christo is hopeful to attend the competition next year rather than participate virtually because experiencing the vibrant cultures of Peru is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
“Yes, it is disappointing, especially after everybody’s efforts in preparation for the trip. Part of the competition naturally includes charitable work, and the Middelburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry sponsored all the uniquely South African gifts I would have handed over to Peru’s children’s homes. All things happen for a reason, and I am hopeful that my chance to participate is waiting around the bend.”
