Chinese national sentenced for dealing in Rhino horn

The accused was sentenced a further two years imprisonment for contravention of the Immigration Act.

Shuihau Chen(50) was found guilty and sentenced by the Kempton Park District Court on Tuesday, 4 April, for receiving rhino horns without a permit. Chen was sentenced to R500 000 fine or five years imprisonment for dealing in rhino horns.

The accused was arrested in 2019 by the Middelburg-based Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team in Johannesburg during a clandestine operation.

He has been in custody since his arrest. His vehicle, a VW Tiguan valued at R400 000 that was used in the commission of crime was forfeited to the State.

Chen was further sentenced to two years imprisonment without the option of a fine for two counts of contravening the Immigration Act. The court also ordered that Chen must be deported to China after serving his sentence.
