Penalty shootout drama at Mhluzi Stadium

Hundreds of people flocked to the Themba Senamela Stadium on Youth Day, to witness spectacular saves, crunching tackles and out-of-this-world goals.

The Mayivuthe Youth Tournament showcased a sublime array of soccer skills across various age groups and teams.

With every match billed as final, the main event was between Pretty Stars and Kwazamokuhle United.

Evenly matched, both sides played end-to-end football, with the coaches relying on individual errors or moments of magic to separate the two teams.

There was an abundance of both, with Kwazamokuhle United leading by a score of 2–1, and a sudden lapse of concentration from the defence allowed Pretty Stars to capitalise during a tense moment that felt like it lasted an eternity. The Pretty Stars striker then managed to get the best of United’s goalkeeper by slipping the ball into the back of the net.

The equaliser came at the end of the match, to the delight of Pretty Stars and the dismay of Kwazamokuhle United.

With both sides deadlocked, the ensuing penalty shootout was an agonising affair, with the tides of victory constantly switching between the two teams.

Both goalkeepers stepped up to slot their spot kicks home. With Pretty Stars in the ascendancy, number six from Kwazamokuhle United had to score to keep his side alive.

With a run-up that would make Neymar jealous, number six hit a tame shot that was saved by the opposing keeper, ecstatic displays of jubilation followed, and the crowd invaded the pitch to celebrate their heroes.

Pretty Stars won via penalties by 4–3, a score line that will be etched into the record books and the minds of all who had the fortune to witness such a stunning final.
