Main entrance to HTS Middelburg blocked off by protesters

There were major traffic disruptions at the entrance of HTS Middelburg and Samora Machel Street this morning due to striking general workers blocking the entrance to the school.

The main gate in Samora Machel Street has been cordoned off and protesters are stationed there, preventing entrance and exit to the school at that gate.

According to a circular released by HTS Middelburg, the disruption is a result of labour disputes by general employees of the school.

The circular states that mediation between the school’s governing body and the Union representing the employees, has been unsuccessful.

The strike has been approved by the CCMA and action has been restricted to the main entrance leading from Samora Machel as of July 19, and will continue on weekdays from 07:00 to 17:00.

HTS Middelburg has the necessary security available and ensures the safety of pupils and staff members.

The main entrance will be locked but the south and west entrances remain open for passage.
All efforts to ensure that classes and other activities resume as normal are being made.

Parents and students are advised not to confront or make contact with protesters.

The circular concluded that as long as striking employees remain within the agreed terms of the protest, no problems should arise, and that the safety of students and staff members remains first priority.

• Motorists are advised that the protest action is affecting traffic in the area.
