Schools in need of assistance after fire

The uBhetyan-O-Africa fire has thrown a spanner in the works for several schools who had booked the lodge as their leadership camp venue.

Several schools from the Volksrust area are in need of assistance to ensure their leadership camp plans are not spoiled by recent fires.

During last night’s severe storm, lightning struck uBhetyan’s thatched roof, causing the a fire that burnt the lodge’s restaurant in under two hours.

This was the latest in a series of unfortunate events for the schools, as uBhetyan was selected as the venue, after their previous choice of accommodation had been burnt down in a veld fire a few weeks prior.

All of uBhetyan’s cutlery, food and freezers were destroyed in the fire.

Fortunately, uBhetyan has an alternative kitchen that will be in use, with staff and volunteers clearing away the rubble of the fire deep into the night to ensure the children’s safety, as the first school is expected to arrive tomorrow afternoon.

A total of 70 children will be arriving tomorrow afternoon, and the public is urged to contribute and assist, by providing cutlery, food and food storage for the children, as they will need three meals a day from the Sunday to the Tuesday.

If you would like to ensure the leadership camp will proceed as planned, please contact Nico Heyns on 082 716 6413 or Barbara Heyns on 082 047 4097.
