Eyewitness account: Crash victims flee before police arrive

The speed at which the crash victims who rolled their vehicle on the R555 fled the scene has raised eyebrows under an eyewitness, who saw the accident and stopped to help.

The eyewitness requested anonymity, after reportedly seeing the men in the vehicle flee with assault rifles and a bag full of 9 mm guns.

According to the eyewitness’ account, he was driving down Springbok Street towards Middelburg when he observed three vehicles speeding along the R555 (Stoffberg road) in the opposite direction.

The convoy was led by a white Ford Figo, with the silver Hyundai in the middle and a white Ford Ranger double-cab behind.

The silver Hyundai lost control after striking a bump in the road and overturned.

“The Ford Figo kept speeding along the R555 without stopping, but the Ford Ranger pulled over to load the occupants of the crashed Hyundai into the bakkie. As they climbed aboard, I saw them loading at least two or three assault rifles as well as a bag full of 9 mm guns.”

The eyewitness further alleged that the Ford Ranger managed to clear off from the scene within three minutes, well before the police even arrived.

“I can’t say that they are guilty of anything, but it is certainly fishy for them to flee an accident so quickly. If you have nothing to hide, why would you not wait where you are?”

The eyewitness added that the Ford Ranger was seen standing next to the R555 once police had left the scene.

• The silver Hyundai has Ayanda M VIP Protection branding on it, which is believed to be a security company employed by the Long Distance Taxi Association.
