Rugby fever: Bosman Grobler and SA Parliamentary World Cup team back in SA

The DA in Mpumalanga cheered its Provincial Chairperson, Bosman Grobler, on the sidelines of the Interparliamentary Rugby World Cup.

Mr Grobler was selected to represent the South African Parliamentary Rugby Club (SAPRFC) at the 2023 Parliamentary Rugby World Cup from August 29 to September 9.
He’s back in the country and says the experience was, yet again, a highlight of his life.

The team was invited to the World Cup opening ceremony and was privileged to receive an invite to the first World Cup game between France and New Zealand.
The touring squad is made up of Members of Parliament, parliamentary officials, protection services employees, and guest players in good standing with the club.

The SAPRFC has been in existence since 1995 with its first Honorary Chairperson, the late former president Nelson Mandela.
Since then, the Deputy President of the Republic assumed the role of Honorary Chairperson and patron of the club.

The club was founded on the eve of the 1995 Rugby World Cup by Members of Parliament from all political parties represented in the national legislature.

One of the key objectives of the club is to bring together MPs and former MPs from all parties in Parliament and legislatures to work towards nation-building, friendship, and solidarity across party lines.

Driven by these objectives, the club successfully hosted the first Parliamentary Rugby World Cup as a build-up towards the 1995 Rugby World Cup, with participating parliamentary teams from countries such as France, England, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, Japan and the European Parliament.

Over the years, the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa has successfully participated in these tournaments and has established sound relations with all the other participating countries.

The SAPRFC is also an Associate Member of the South African Rugby Union.

Mr Grobler also represented South Africa at the 2019 Interparliamentary Rugby World Cup in Japan.

The SA Parliamentary team played three games, one of which they won, the scores were:

SA 50 – England 5

Ireland 41 – SA 17

France 24 – SA 19.
