Businessman robbed, shot in Middelburg Mall Absa branch
A local businessman was shot in the foot by one of two armed robbers who targeted the victim when he entered the Middelburg Mall's Absa branch to deposit cash earlier today.
The robbery took place moments ago and the Absa branch in the mall is presently cordoned off, but is expected to reopen once police have finished their forensic sweep of the scene.
The robbers specifically targeted the businessman who came to the Absa branch with two other men to deposit cash, which they carried into the bank in a bag.
According to Middelburg Mall Manager Mike Tammadge the two robbers can be seen entering the branch shortly before the three men with the bag of cash go in.
Mr Tammadage says it’s clear that the robbers had intelligence on the trio, with one of the robbers immediately accosting the businessman with bag full of cash, when he fell into the queue to deposit the money.
The robber demanded the bag of cash from the victim who refused to hand it over.
The robber then pulled out a firearm and fired a shot at the victim’s foot.
The victim sustained a flesh wound and was taken to hospital in stable condition.
A getaway car, parked at one of the entrances to the mall with its engine running, sped off with the robbers.
Mr Tammadge says only the single shot was fired and that it was clear the robbers had been there for the businessman specifically as no other clients, nor Absa staff, were targeted.
The victim has not been identified and a manhunt has been launched for the suspects who fled in a white VW Polo.
