Son allegedly hacks father to death with a spade

A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly hacking his 58-year-old biological father to death with a spade in Mshongo Village near Leeuwfontein Township outside Marble Hall yesterday (Tuesday) following a domestic dispute.

Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said that according to reports, the two men were doing construction work in a yard when they got into the altercation, “Allegedly, the son grabbed a spade and hit the victim multiple times. After the incident, the police in Motetema, as well as Emergency Medical Services, were summoned to the location where they found the victim lying in a pool of blood. The elderly man was certified dead, and the police managed to apprehend the suspect.”

He indicated that police have opened a case of murder and are currently investigating the circumstances that might have led to the brutal act.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, condemned the incident and urged community members to resolve matters civilly, instead of resorting to violence, “The brutal and senseless attack could have been avoided if they decided to seek professional help,” he concluded.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Motetema Magistrate’s Court on October 19 facing a charge of murder.

The name of the deceased could not be released before the next of kin were informed.
