Tensions rise at HTS as resolution nears

The ongoing strike at HTS Middelburg is nearing a resolution, as the workers have agreed to return to work tomorrow morning at 07:30, but will still negotiate with the school over key points.

A memorandum is being created that will be handed in upon the workers’ arrival at the school tomorrow morning.
However, the striking workers have threatened to go back on strike if their demands, as listed in the memorandum, are not met.

Despite this, today can be seen as a major breakthrough for the two parties.

The EFF members at the school.

Having begun four months ago, the strike reached fever pitch this morning, where dozens of EFF members were present as part of the protest at the school’s northern gate.
This caused major concern for parents, who feared for their children’s safety, as even teachers were not able to gain entry onto the premises.

The police were present at the scene in large numbers, one officer, in particular, was key in helping the governing body speak with the original striking workers.

A toyi-toying group of protesters moved to a glass business in Jeppe Street and alleged the owner of the business “assaulted” one of them this morning.

It’s expected that they will go back to the school later today with the support of more homeless people they are busy gathering in town.
