Town picks up the pieces after severe storm

Hendrina residents were left to pick up the pieces early this morning after a devastating hailstorm struck yesterday evening.

According to community spokesperson, Marlie Wolmarans, large parts of the town suffered extensive damages with reports of fallen trees, damaged roofs, shattered windows and power outages.

Her husband and +VF Ward Councillor, Corrie Wolmarans, is currently busy assessing the flatlets at the SAVF retirement village and old age home, where significant damage was reported.

“In the 25 years I have lived here, I have never experienced a storm of this magnitude. Hundreds of birds are lying dead in the streets!”

A severe storm swept over the greater Mpumalanga area yesterday evening shortly after 17:00, with a tornado moving between Standerton and Bethal, as well as hail experienced in Hendrina and the Pullenshope area.

Gauteng also suffered extensive damages due to hail.
