Highlights of November
While many were waiting for Black Friday and writing their Christmas lists, two families in Mhluzi were in mourning for their departed loved ones. Here are the stories that made headlines in November:
12-year-old crushed to death by collapsing wall – by Tiisetso Malunga.
A 12-year-old boy lost his life in Newtown. Sibongumusa Mngomezulu, returning from school, was playing with friends in a dilapidated house when a brick wall collapsed, trapping him under the rubble. Despite residents rushing to the scene, Sibongumusa suffered a fatal skull fracture.

Millions up in smoke – by Matthew Handley.
Eastdene Shopping Centre suffered a devastating loss after two of its most popular shops went up in flames. A robbery went wrong at the Saverite Supermarket and spread to AC Moosa’s. The aftermath left both stores destroyed, with heavy damage to Union Bazaar. The business owners lost their livelihood and workers were left without jobs.

The community mourned the loss of municipal worker Percy Mavuso in November. Mr Mavuso was struck by a vehicle with two women inside.
He and his cousin were standing on the corner of a road when a car came out of nowhere and hit him. Despite an investigation by the Mhluzi Police, the suspects remain at large weeks after the incident.
