Traffic alert – oil spill leaves Kranspoort Pass slippery

The R35 (Bethal) had to be closed after a truck accident and the road surface of Kranspoort Pass is slippery after an oil spill.

Van Wettens Towing Services were kept busy throughout the night, which started off with a truck overturning and losing its load on the R35 Bethal road. The R35 was closed temporarily at 21:00 to allow recovery of a vehicle.

A few hours thereafter, Louwtjie Swart from Van Wettens also informed that a large oil and diesel spill occurred in Kranspoort Pass at roughly midnight. He cautioned that the road surface is very slippery. Motorists are urged to approach with caution.

Two of Van Wettens’ drivers and the driver of one of their clients were also shot at and robbed of their personal belongings at 03:00 this morning.

The incident occurred after two tow truck drivers were dispatched to haul a truck that broke down between Hendrina and Komati. The three drivers were accosted, tied up and robbed before the suspects fled with the Van Wettens Towing vehicle.

Fellow tow truck drivers of Van Wettens were alerted of the robbery and cut off the fleeing robbers while rushing to the scene.

The robbers allegedly abandoned the truck and fled into the darkness.
