Newborn baby boy found abandoned on Weeber Street
The baby was left outside the complex on Weeber Street between 09:45 and 10:15.
A newborn baby boy was found abandoned in bushes outside a complex on Weeber Street this morning.
The child is confirmed to be safe and healthy, but was taken to the Middelburg Provincial Hospital as a precaution.
At 10:20, he was found asleep, wrapped in a clean blanket, with his diaper recently changed. His umbilical cord was still clamped.
Mr Louwtjie Naude, the person who found the neglected baby, spoke to the Middelburg Observer about the ordeal.
“I had gone to the gate to fetch a package for my wife when I noticed something strange near the gate. My wife’s friend couldn’t find our house, so I went to stand in the road for her to see me.
“I approached whatever was underneath the blanket to figure out what this thing could be, because, at first, I thought it might be the package. I had a massive fright when I realised it was a baby, I jumped back out of shock.”
Mr Naude and his wife Lorraine immediately called the proper authorities to come and attend to the child.
Frances Davis of the Madison Baby Saver, situated on Bhimy Damane Street, arrived on the scene to make sure the baby boy was safe and taken care of.
