The top Middelburg Observer stories from February

The look back at the year's top stories continues, this time with February.

Thanks to Valentines Day, February is often associated with love and romance. For fans of the local sports scene, it is also known as the part of the year when things finally start clicking into gear.

As is the case with local cycling legend PC Nell, who started 2024 by reaching the amazing milestone of 100 000km ridden.

“The distance local cyclist Nell (57) has covered on his bicycle would be enough for him to travel around the world twice, and then he’d still have some change to spare.”

Well done on the incredible accomplishment!

Feb also saw local golfing star Aldrich Potgieter become the youngest ever winner on the Korn Ferry Tour, which would be just the start of the historic year Aldrich would go on to have.

Aldrich the history maker.

Controversy was never far away this month either, as fists were thrown at the Dennesig Waste Transfer Station, after claims of kidnapping brought the site to a standstill.

There was also tragedy this month, as three women who died as a result of an accident on the Stoffberg Road were formally identified.
