We look back to a September filled with inspiration
As we look back on September’s highlights, it is impossible to miss our residents’ true daring and grit.

From cancer survivors running a race of recovery, to our own Paralympian and a young girl who bravely finds healing amid pain and trauma.
Vanessa runs her road to recovery
Vanessa Haarhoff’s inspiring story made it into the paper twice after she completed the Cross the Line 10km race amid cancer treatment.
The empowering and inspiring woman was diagnosed with breast cancer, but despite undergoing radiation and chemotherapy, Vanessa decided to brave a 10km race, which she finished with true fighting spirit.
That 10km was less a race and more a personal pilgrimage.

Hendricks goes to Paris
Nathan Hendricks represented Middelburg and South Africa in swimming at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Hendricks was diagnosed with Stargardt disease at 12 years old, a disease which causes the loss of sight in children and young adults.
Nathan’s outstanding performance at the Paralympic Games was another story of inspiration.

Blitzbokke in Middelburg
Hoërskool Kanonkop’s Heritage Festival brought the Blitzbokke to Middelburg.
The event brought outstanding 7s rugby to the community, with Kanonkop’s Swart Leeus contending against other schools as well as exhibition matches between Middelburg’s 7s team, the Bulldogs against the Blitzbokke and All Stars.

I miss my daddy
The community was rocked by the horrific car accident that left the young Lemay Fouche battling for her life in hospital.
Lemay was in the car with her father, Mornay, and grandfather, Johnny.
Despite the accident claiming the lives of both her father and grandfather, Lemay bravely walked her journey of healing and made a full recovery after several painful and traumatic months.
