DA delivers letter demanding better service to Middelburg’s mayor
The DA initiative was created at the beginning of November 2024 and has since accumulated thousands of signatures, with the most recent major pit stop at Kanonkop Superspar.
Today, Middelburg DA councillors handed a memorandum demanding better service delivery from the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality (STLM) over to Executive Mayor Mhlonishwa Masilela.
In a statement shared by councillor Elsie Vermooten, she wrote, “Service delivery in Steve Tshwete is slowly deteriorating. On a daily basis, residents are confronted with power outages, water supply shortages and maintenance challenges.”

As yesterday was the final day to sign the petition, members of the DA, led by Vermooten, stood outside the municipality building yesterday, decrying the decay of Middelburg.

The following is a list of key points that must be addressed by STLM:
• Repair streetlights and apollo lights
• Water supply shortages
• Electricity infrastructure
• Community engagement
Vermooten concluded the statement, writing, “We will not sit back and watch Steve Tshwete residents bear the brunt of poor service delivery. We urge the municipality to engage with residents and demonstrate commitment and leadership required to restore confidence in the delivery of essential services.”
The topic on which the DA and Vermooten are challenging the municipality is something the Middelburg Observer’s readership value highly.
Last week, the Observer posted on Facebook, asking the public, “Are you sick and tired of broken streetlights?” The response was a unanimous yes, with over 160 responses at the time of writing.
Residents from Kanonkop, Aerorand, Mhluzi, Eastdene, Dennesig, Nasaret, Clubville, Rockdale, Gholfsig, Hendrina, and everywhere between vented their frustrations by commentating that there are non-functioning street lights in these areas.

A sentiment echoed by the public and in the memorandum is the lack of response by the municipality, but, after today, the ball is firmly in STLM’s court.
