Residents behind hospital forced to grin and bear raw sewage

Now all the hard work done for the benefit of the community is going to ‘waste’, as the issue has been going on for longer than a week.

The park behind the Middelburg Provincial Hospital has been left to deal with the stench and sight of flowing sewage for over a week, and residents have had enough.

The Middelburg Observer spoke to DA Ward Councillor Elsie Vermooten, who said that two private citizens, who asked not to be named, have been doing the majority of the upkeep of the park.

“It serves as an inspiration, I’ve observed many follow your example. Your efforts in maintaining the space are truly appreciated,” Vermooten stated.

“It is unlike any park in town in terms of tidiness, but now the smell is unbearable.”

In a video shared by the councillor, the sewage spill is seen seeping from behind the hospital’s wall, and when flowing goes directly into the street.
