Filling station suffers R1.5m in damages, fraud suspect out on bail

A suspect facing charges of fraud was released on R10 000 bail after handing himself over to the Hawks.

Bonginkosi Shongwe (38) was released on R10 000 bail by the Middelburg District Court yesterday after handing himself over to the Hawks Middelburg based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation.

Shongwe is accused of defrauding a filling station in Middelburg by allegedly using cloned bank cards.

The company suffered an actual loss of R1.5m.

Shongwe’s accomplice was arrested on the scene of crime. He also appeared in court earlier, where he was granted R10 000 bail.

Shongwe’s case was postponed to 21 February, where he will join his co-accused.

“We are working closely with financial institutions and businesses to combat this type of crime and to bring the perpetrators to justice,” said the Mpumalanga Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Nico Gerber.
