Rugby club left in the dark by STLM

With the majority of Kees Taljaard Stadium’s lights not working, the Middelburg Rugby Club are set to head into the season unable to play night games.

The club contacted the Middelburg Observer to express their frustrations about the situation, stating, “We need answers.”

First reported in the December 6, 2024, issue of the paper, the club bemoaned the electrical problems, the dilapidated state of the pavilion, and water and pipe problems in the bathrooms and changing rooms.

This has led to the cancellation of several practices and a lack of continuity within the squad.

The rugby club looked to 2025 as a fresh start for all involved in the beloved and iconic fixture of our community, with multiple trials being held to capitalise on the renewed interest and excitement, yet this goodwill could be undone by factors outside the club management’s control.

As the club is contracted into a lease agreement with the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality (STLM), they have reported all these issues with the proper departments numerous times, yet nothing has been fixed.

The Observer contacted the municipality about these concerns, with STLM stating, “We are aware of the situation at Kees Taljaard Stadium and are in constant communication with the Middelburg Rugby Club. We are awaiting a budget to be made available to address these concerns.”
