What a waste! Sewage spill behind hospital continues

The spill is directly opposite the immaculately kept park on the corner of Hospitaal and McDonald streets.

For three weeks, sewage has been spilling onto Hospitaal Road directly from the Middelburg Provincial Hospital, forcing residents to endure the horrid smell of waste.

The spill is directly opposite the immaculately kept park on the corner of Hospitaal and McDonald streets.

The Middelburg Observer visited the site alongside DA Ward Councillor Elsie Vermooten on February 18 and witnessed first-hand the brown and green water pooling onto the street.

Vermooten said she was told the device needed to stop the spillage would be picked up in Mbombela during the week.

As the spill originates from inside the borders of the hospital, there is not much the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality can do to curtail the issue, as the property belongs to the Mpumalanga Government.

As such, Vermooten said she has referred the matter to Bosman Grobler, a member of the provincial legislature. Grobler will put forth the issue in the next provincial government meeting.

The park, tainted by the putrid smell, is routinely maintained by two private citizens, who wish not to be named.

Doing the majority of the upkeep themselves, these individuals’ hard work out of love and respect for their community is being squandered.

• Vermooten said that she was told an attempt to clean the spill at its source would happen later today (February 21).
