Men accused of stealing from court official’s home in the dock

Alleged criminals accused of unlawfully entering the home of a senior Middelburg Magistrates’ Court official made a brief court appearance last Wednesday.

According to information, the men, Thabang Maloma, Thabiso William Legau, and Godfrey Sithole, forcibly entered the house located on Ngwako Street.

At the time of the burglary, the complainant was not at home.
When he returned home on January 3, he noticed his kitchen door had been broken.

Upon further investigation, he found that his kitchen had been ransacked, and his electronic equipment and jewellery had also been stolen.

Fortunately, an iPhone that was stolen was tracked to Ernest Street in Mhluzi.

One of the accused was found with some of the stolen items.
He was consequently arrested, and the other suspects were also arrested.

On Wednesday, during the accused’s appearance, the presiding magistrate, Solomon Gololo, said he would recuse himself from the matter due to his professional relationship with the complainant, who is his senior.

The state said it would also oppose bail.

Surprisingly, during their appearance, Maloma asked to address the court, saying that he knew nothing about the burglary and that the other accused just ‘gave him the stolen items’. An elderly woman also shouted out and asked the three accused why they were ‘tampering with her weak heart’.

The matter was postponed to find an outside magistrate to preside on the matter.
