DA says Kanonkop water interruptions becoming a daily occurrence

Water flowing down streets, not taps

The DA in Steve Tshwete Municipality has written to the Executive Director of Infrastructure and Technical Services, Lindiwe Silolo, to urgently attend to the issue of pipe bursts in Kanonkop.

Residents of Kanonkop are facing an ongoing crisis as water pipe bursts have become a daily occurrence in the area. Some days, there have been as many as four separate pipe bursts, leaving local families without water for extended periods, sometimes lasting for days.

The recurring nature of this issue has raised significant concern within the community, leading many to question the municipality’s ability to effectively address, and resolve the problem.

Despite numerous complaints, there has been no implementation of a sustainable, long-term solutions. Residents are increasingly frustrated by what appears to be a lack of strategic planning.

The frequency and severity of these pipe bursts have placed a considerable strain on residents’ daily lives, many of whom rely on water for basic needs such as cooking, cleaning, and hygiene. The inconvenience and potential health risks associated with prolonged water outages are becoming critical concerns for the community. Yet, there is no clear indication of any significant intervention or remedy from local authorities.

Community members have pointed out that the recurring problem may stem from aging infrastructure, insufficient maintenance, substandard contractors who replaced old asbestos pipes with PVC pipes, and inadequate planning. However, despite these warnings, no strategic efforts have been made to address the root causes of the frequent bursts.

In light of the ongoing water crisis, residents are calling for immediate intervention from municipal authorities. They urge the prioritization of repairing and upgrading the water supply infrastructure in Kanonkop. They demand transparency and accountability from the municipality in their efforts to resolve the issue and ensure a reliable, sustainable water supply for the community.
