CPF clean-up yields massive results
The CPF sector 1 clean-up initiative that took place last Saturday was a raging success, according to member and co-ordinator Naas Botes.
Members of the CPF, as well as residents in Brug and Meyer streets, put their hands together to tackle the mass pollution and illegal structures occupying the bushes under the historical Meyer bridge, which shelters vagrants and criminals who have been accused of plaguing the area.
According to Botes, Sector 1 was pleasantly surprised to witness the support they received from the community, with several residents pitching up to lend a hand, while others made much needed donations.
“The clean-up was arranged in short notice so we didn’t have many volunteers available, but the people who did show up did a tremendous job!”

The clean-up focused on the stretch of Klein Olifants from the Middelburg Fire Brigade to Solly’s Delta, but due to the mammoth task, a second and third clean-up will have to be arranged at a later stage to cover the entire area.
“It was shocking to see how many vagrants hide within these bushes, as well as the masses of rubbish being dumped in these areas. One of our CPF members arranged for a skip, which we filled within the first 30 minutes.”
According to Botes, their clean-up efforts have once again brought issues of vagrancy and illegal dumping into the public eye, “The vagrants living in this area are not solely to blame for the mass littering, and we have members of the public who are guilty of it too. We saw a lot of used nappies, plastic bottle caps, and broken glass bottles.”

Botes said the group of volunteers counted roughly 14 helpers throughout the day, all of whom did an outstanding job, “There was no conflict, everyone worked as one man and I wish to thank each and every person for their help and support. I do wish to call on Middelburg’s youth to get involved on future clean-ups. We saw a lot of elderly, where are our youth?”
• The CPF will be arranging a second and third clean-up at a later stage, the dates of which will be published timeously in the Middelburg Observer.
