Mass flooding leaves Middelburg South and Mineralia underwater

Residents and motorists have been urged to avoid the area with all low water bridges and many streets closed.

Chairperson of the Middelburg CPF, Juanitha Groenewald has declared a disaster and is urging residents and motorists to avoid the area in Middelburg South and Mineralia due to mass flooding.

While several sources are reporting that Kruger Dam is overflowing due to heavy rainfall, Groenewald told the Middelburg Observer that the flooding is a result of the Kruger Dam wall bursting.

“From Kruger Dam wall to Laerskool CR Swart is underwater and resembles a dam itself. People please need to stay away! This is a disaster and the Middelburg Fire Department is currently surveying the area to determine the extent of the flooding.”

According to Groenewald, Oranje Street (near Virgin Active), Samora Machel Drive (especially the stretch between Hoog- and Jeppe), up until Verdoorn is underwater.

All low water bridges are also overflowing, including the one in Koppie Street, as well as the one near the Middelburg Country Club between Totius Street and Roberts Estate.

The Middelburg CPF is currently patrolling and closing streets where necessary until the traffic department is on scene.
